Tahiti holidays are extremely expensive and very commercialized compared to its South Pacific neighbours. Here you'll find lots of large hotel chains, expensive restaurants, beautiful homes and an erosion of local culture on the main tourist islands. However, there are several unique aspects of the country that make this one of the most charming and romantic destinations in the South Pacific.

The main reason to visit French Polynesia is if you're looking for an upmarket romantic escape, staying in an over water bungalow with fantastic lagoon views, with great French cuisine, and preferably on a small uninhabited island cut off from the world. Other popular reasons to visit are for its dramatic coastal scenery, particularly Cooks Bay on
Moorea and around Bora Bora; for its world class scuba diving highlighting tropical reef fish, soft corals and pelagics in the Tuamotu Group and Bora Bora and for its exceptional sailing around the bays and offshore motu surrounding Raiatea & Tahaa. If you're looking for an overnight cruise, then French Polynesia offers some of the best cruises in the South Pacific with its stunning coastal landscapes and deep bays.

For adventurers, the mystery and remoteness of the
Marquesas Islands is ideal for exploring - this is where Paul Gauguin found peace and beauty that inspired his paintings. There are few amenities out here and accommodation is mostly in locally run Pensions.

The majority of tourists visiting Tahiti are French or Italians. There are some English speaking tourists, particularly Americans and British and most of the large resorts have English speaking staff. However, some of the local pensions will have no English language skills and your holiday may become a little awkward. For those not prepared for this language barrier and wishing to stay away from the large resorts, we would recommend visiting the neighbouring islands of
Fiji or the Cook Islands.

If your budget allows you, Tahiti can offer a splendid holiday, with lots of excellent sightseeing, efficient service and five star quality resorts. However, if you are money conscious, you'll find everything in Tahiti to be hugely expensive which can spoil your fun.
