French Polynesia hotels are amongst the most expensive in the world. A typical over-the-water bungalow would cost from US$400 per night and up with the cheapest standard hotel garden view room costing from US$150 per night - not cheap by anyones standards. The large international hotel chains of the Sheraton, Intercontinental, Accor and Sofitel are all here, designing large hotels with over-the-water bungalows and re-creating beaches of white sand and huge swimming pools with fish and dolphins. All great for the glossy brochures. But the fact remains that many of these hotels are built on small plots of land, adjacent to other hotels, on main roads and in less than spectacular coastal locations. If you're looking for true romance, you're better off staying at one of the many charming and remote Fiji Resorts.
French Polynesia has a number of Pension houses, usually a bed and breakfast style room or private house within a family garden. These offer much better value for money and can be in spectacular off the beaten track locations. A simple room with en-suite bathroom will cost from US$100 per night.
For the backpack traveller, French Polynesia offers few dorm rooms and budget rooms with shared facilities go for about US$20 per night. Camping on French Polynesia, and to a greater extent on Moorea, is the best way to save the money.
